We want to thank you for deciding to join our USA Softball of Utah umpire team. We want you to be successful and progress to the level of officiating you desire.
FASTPITCH, SLOW PITCH, OR BOTH?
One of your first decisions is the type of softball you want to officiate.
As a fastpitch official, there are girls games from 8U to 18U in both recreation and accellerated leagues. As you gain experience you may also opt to officiate the men's fastpitch leagues. These midweek games typically start at about 5PM. The accelerated leagues run two official crews. The recreation leagues are one official assignments.
Many USA Softball of Utah officials love to officiate the slow pitch game. Slow pitch includes the coed leagues and the men's leagues. These midweek games typically start at about 6PM. The slow pitch games are one official assignments.
The fee is the same, so why not get the training and experience in both the slow pitch and fastpitch games? Set your goals high, and then decide what you like to do best. We encourage all of our officials to be trained and experienced in both games.
APPLICATION & FEES
You must complete the application, pay your fee, and then authorize and pass the background check. The annual fees are $72. This includes your insurance coverage for USA Softball games. Payment can be made in either cash, check or major credit/debit card.
Each year, every USA Softball official must pass the exam. You can download it ahead of time and spend as much time as you want preparing for your test. You can take the exam either open book or closed book. If you desire a higher ranking and more money at fastpitch tournaments, then you want to be able to pass the exam closed book and achieve at least 90%.
To become an official for USA Softball of Utah you will want to attend both a "School" and a "Clinic". These are offered as part of your dues. You can attend as many of each as you desire.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SCHOOL & CLINIC?
Umpire school is a day of fun with both classroom and field practical training. It gives the umpire a chance to be evaluated on the field and ranked for the upcoming season. Umpires are expected to show up 30 minutes early, just as they would for a normal game assignement. You should bring along all of your gear and uniforms for the uniform check. We will have the "Store" at each clinic and school to allow you the ability to easily obtain the equipment and gear you need. Plan on a full day of fun with a good lunch provided.
Clinics are indoor classroom presentations that are designed to educate on new rules, points of emphasis, important information, awards presentations, and test preparation. That's right, if you haven't yet mastered the 2018 exam, then you will participate in a two hour test preparation that will help understand the concepts from allthe questions. You may then take the exam either open book or closed book.
A huge bonus to becoming an USA Softball of Utah official is participating in the long list of fastpitch and slowpitch tournaments. Take a look at the current 2018 fastpitch tournament link below and you will see over 30 tournaments scheduled here in Utah. With the first starting in early February in St. George and the last being in mid-November in St. George. The majority of tournaments in Utah are Friday-Saturday events. There are also opportunities for nearby state tournaments, most of which are Saturday-Sunday events. As you gain more experience there will be opportunities to officiate at week long National tournaments. There are lots of opportunities for improvement, advancement, and achievement.
UMPIRE GEAR & UNIFORM
Uniformity is a big part of USA Softball of Utah. We have a standard uniform that every umpire is expected to wear. This includes hats, shirts, pants/shorts, and ball bags. The complete catalog of clothing and gear is found at www.OfficialGear.com. Here is Utah, for fastpitch we wear the heather gray slacks, although the navy is allowed if you match your partners. If you are buying new slacks, then get the official Fechheimer Pro-Quality Men's Gray Base polyester knit w/western cut pockets at $45 a pair. If money is tight at the beginning, there are always fellow umpires that have older uniforms and equipment you can borrow. We have all been there and know it is tough to get started. So let's get you started and set your goals on the complete, newest style, uniform and safety gear.
we feel that social media has been a great resource for all of our umpires. We have Facebook and Twitter feeds to help convey information. One of our best resources is our Facebook closed private group. It allows us to interact, ask questions, express our ignorance, and learn from each other's experience in a private setting.
